Swan LogoINSTRUCTION SHEET FOR POST-OP SUTURE CARE

Your sutures (or “stitches) need to be kept clean and away from water, soap, shampoo, etc.

Large “pressure” bandages (after mastoid or parotid surgery for example) need to be left intact until removed at the office.  Avoid resting or sleeping on these dressings.  Reinforce them as needed.

After dressings are off, clean the area with hydrogen peroxide, then apply antibiotic ointment liberally, 3-4 times daily.  Take oral antibiotics if prescribed.

Keep follow-up appointments as scheduled for suture removal in the office.  After sutures are out, you’ll probably have “Steri-strips” over the area for a few more days.  It is OK to let them fall off when they’re ready.

Call the office if your surgical site gets red, sore or begins draining.
