Traditional uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) or laser assisted patatoplasty (LAUP) are performed in order to improve communication of airflow between the back of the nose and the back of the throat. As a consequence of trimming the elongated uvula and elongated/redundant soft palate, there is generally a significant decrease in snoring, although not necessarily a resolution of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. A very distinct disadvantage of the palatal/tonsillar procedures has been one of pain with a long postoperative period of recuperation (approximately 1-2 weeks out of work)
